Have you devoted mental energy of curiosity and exploration to moving in ways that you're actually interested in?
Or are you joining a gym, doing a group fitness, or strength training class that you should do because you’ve read it’s the “best” for you.
Many people are stuck in a lower level of motivation in life because they haven't done the sometimes scary, difficult, and potentially exhilarating work of deciding for themselves what they want to do.
Paul Sarte, a 20th century french philosopher said it succinctly, “freedom is terrifying”.
It’s absolutely easier to follow directions from an external authority in life: whether it be culture, your parents, an influencer, or even an “expert”.
But if you want to develop passion and meaning in your life-especially in fitness, you have to separate yourself from the external forces that shape you (for better or worse) and decide for yourself.
Passion and meaning is what we’re really after right?
We all want to WANT to do something.
It’s only going to come from an embrace of our freedom. A freedom to personally explore, get curious, and choose what we're individually interested in.
It’s hardwork.
It’s scary.
It’s not given, it’s earned.
But,
If you're privileged enough to even be able to choose, you owe it to yourself to step back and do so.
And in my opinion, it makes life worth living, and hell, if more people are passionate about what they're doing, it might make the world a better place.
